「展示室に鳥のための空間を作り、草間彌生の屋外彫刻《南瓜》を展示室内に入れる。そして鳥を放つ。」それが、狩野哲郎が最初に出した本展覧会の展示プランだった。本気なのか冗談なのかわからないいつもの口調で発せられたこの案は、突飛なようだが狩野の問題意識をよく表している。鮮やかな黄色に黒いドットが目を惹く《南瓜》は20年近く福岡市美術館の屋外に展示されてきた。屋外彫刻として作られてはいるものの、強い日差しや風雨に曝されるためFRP（強化繊維プラスチック）という素材にとって相応しい環境に置かれているとは言い難い本作を、温湿度の安定した空間でUVカット照明の下展示することは作品保存の観点から言えばこれ以上のことはない。しかし同時に《南瓜》は屋外彫刻としての本来の機能を剥奪されてしまう。また、その空間に鳥を放てば状況はより複雑になる。屋外であれば日常的に発生しているはずの鳥の糞害が、美術館展示室の中では非常事態として認識されるのだから。残念ながら実現には至らなかったが、狩野はこの案において美術作品および美術館の役割や機能、そしてわたしたちの固定観念を脱臼し、美術そして美術館の不条理なルールとそこに身を浸しているわたし（たち）の立ち位置に問いを投げかけるものでもあった。
